The depths of sedation are imperative to know.
Its important to understand that moderate sedation requires the patient to be calm and comfortable, but still able to respond to verbal or tactile stimulation. If the patient does not respond unless there is repeated or painful stimuli, then he/she is in a state of deep sedation. Also, anxiolytics with an oral dose of a mild medication leads to minimal sedation and does not require the safeguards we are discussing in this course.
