What is Moderate Sedation
Moderate sedation is a level of sedation on the continuum of anesthesia. It is not anxiolysis, which one might get with an oral dose of Xanax and which does not require monitoring. It is also not deep sedation, where a patient does not react purposefully, except with painful stimulation. It is important that you are aware of the level of sedation you are trying to achieve, and your level of responsibility in assessing the patient throughout the procedure.
It is our goal to make this course as painless as possible, while keeping it useful and interesting.
While the amount of information one needs to know regarding moderate sedation is extensive, this program is predicated on the basis that you are a physician with specialty level training or beyond, and have good basic knowledge and skills in physical exam and patient care. Basic airway and cardiac resuscitation skills are essential and are taught in BLS and ACLS. These two courses are prerequisites to safe sedation practice.
Please keep in mind that anesthesia is an ever changing field and the physician is advised to check the current product information discussed in this course. It is the responsibility of the treating physician to determine dosages and best treatment of any given patient. Good luck and enjoy!

In 2018, a Task Force on Moderate Sedation produced a report. The task force consisted of members of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American College of Radiology, American Dental Association, American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, and Society of Interventional Radiology*.
This course reflects the efforts and recommendations of that task force.
